Anthropic's draft IPO filing shows an $80.7 billion first-half loss
The Wall Street Journal reviewed Anthropic's draft S-1 and reports $16.3 billion in revenue for the first half of 2026 against an $80.7 billion net loss. About $72 billion of that loss is a non-cash accounting charge tied to convertible notes and other financing instruments, while compute and infrastructure spending was close to $9 billion. The filing lists risks including a narrow customer base and uncertain access to compute, and signals Anthropic could spend up to $750 billion on more compute in the coming years, ahead of an IPO expected in November.
Tesla and SpaceX form special committees to weigh a merger
On SpaceX's earnings call Tuesday, Elon Musk said both boards have formed special committees of independent directors to discuss combining the companies, but they haven't agreed on terms and a deal isn't guaranteed. Musk, who runs both, says he's a conflicted party and isn't on either committee, though he sees "a lot of merit" in a merger. Tesla would need approval from a majority of all its outstanding shares, which Musk called a high hurdle.
OpenAI buys Orchestra Bio to push deeper into drug development
OpenAI acquired Orchestra Bio, a four-year-old startup whose AI agents help biopharma teams monitor studies, track timelines and spot delays. Its team and technology will join Rosalind, OpenAI's life-sciences models and tools, which already count Moderna and Novo Nordisk as partners. Terms weren't disclosed.
Perplexity's Computer agent can now run fully on your Mac
Perplexity launched a fully local mode for Computer, so the model, the agent and the task run entirely on an Apple silicon Mac. With permission it can work across local files and apps like Notes, Messages, Mail and Numbers without sending that data to the cloud, using Qwen 3.6 or Perplexity's tuned PPLX Pro model. It's available to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers, and Perplexity recommends 36 GB of unified memory.
Samsung agrees to use rival TSMC's 3nm process for Nvidia memory parts
Nvidia asked Samsung, SK hynix and Micron to build the base dies of its custom NVHBM high-bandwidth memory on TSMC's 3nm process, and Samsung has agreed after an internal review. Reports put TSMC's 3nm yields above 90%, versus about 60% for Samsung Foundry's 2nm process. Samsung is still validating its own 2nm process as a backup in case TSMC capacity gets tight.
Japan's breach wave widens, with an AI hacking tool tied to part of it
Since late September, at least 20 major Japanese companies, including Lawson, Times Car and Burger King Japan, have reported breaches, and a ransomware attack on SoftBank's IDC Frontier cloud took 495 customer organizations offline. On October 19, GMO Cybersecurity by IERAE said it found traces of ARTEX, a Chinese-developed autonomous AI penetration-testing tool, on infrastructure used against about 20 Japanese companies. The government has issued advisories but hasn't declared an emergency.
Claude designs proteins that bind scorpion toxins in lab tests
Anthropic had an internal research model design mini binders, small proteins that latch onto a target, against scorpion neurotoxins, and 17 of the 211 designs it tested met its criteria. Anthropic isn't claiming an antivenom yet, since it hasn't shown the binders neutralize venom in cells. It frames the result as an early step toward designing drug candidates for hard targets in days.
